Review: This fine compilation, and perhaps the classic “Live At The Regal” album, is really all you need to have a complete overview of the important moments of Riley B. King’s career.
The compilers lean heavily towards King’s 60s and 70s material, with only a few later songs, but that’s okay since the 50s, 60s and early 70s was when B.B. King did his best work. And virtually all of his best 60s and 70s songs are here - the crossover hit “The Thrill Is Gone”, “Sneakin’ Around” “Help The Poor”, and King’s versions of Robert Nighthawk’s “Sweet Little Angel” and Memphis Slim’s “Nobody Loves Me (Every Day I Have The Blues”).
Some may find that his earlier Flair sides should have been here, too, but those who want to can easily get those on the excellent two-LPs-on-one-CD album “Singin’ The Blues / The Blues”, and his early 50s singles (which were more consistent than varied) can also be found on specific compilations.
This CD is highly recommended, though, both as a starting point and for those who just want one B.B. King album in their collection.
